The “I Love Holland”-cushion

maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionThe first grandchild/niece/cousin on my husband’s side of the family is getting married. She was born in The Netherlands, but moved to Canada when she was 8 or 9 years old. Unfortunately we do not see her and the rest of her lovely family a lot, but luckily there’s social media! Thanks to Facebook and the like, we’re able to connect and share parts (photos) of our lives on a regular basis.

Marriage is an important step in your life and calls for a special gift, a gift from the heart in my humble opinion. Happy me, another reason to start crocheting something nice.
Not knowing any colors or style that she and her husband-to-be have decorated their home with, made it a bit hard to decide on this.
maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionHowever, when my mother in law said one of the presents our niece had suggested to her, was a cheese slicer (“kaasschaaf”), a typical Dutch kitchen tool to – you get it – make slicing cheese easier, the link to a “Dutch” present was made in my crochet-brain.
maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushion maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionThe “I Love Holland”-cushion plan was born, thinking and hoping it would be a little reminder to both her and her husband of her Dutch roots.
maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionNów picking colors was easy: “Dutch” colors – red, white and blue as referral to our national flag. Orange referring to our royal family and it also being the color that unites all Dutch in fun, national holidays (e.g. Kingsday, World Soccer Games etc.).

maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionThe pretty granny circle was crocheted following the lovely Cherry Heart‘s tutorial. Joining my “Holland-circles” I used the continuous-join-as-you-go-technique. While doing so, I first thought of a border in orange pompoms (you know how I LOVE pompoms …..), but browsing my pinterest board – actually for something else – I stumbled upon this pin: the gorgeous, gorgeous border design by Dragana Savkov (blog here).
maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushion maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionI immediately felt thís was the perfect border for my cushion and seeing how it worked out, I’m soooo happy that I went for this beautiful design!

For the back I used two fabrics from my stash that had a “Dutch” feel, made an envelope-style cover onto which I sewed the crocheted front and prettied up the back with a separately crocheted trim in the same style as my border.
maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushion maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushion maRRose - CCC: "I love Holland"-cushionI can only conclude that I really LOVE my “I love Holland”-cushion and so hope our sweet niece will too …..

Marianne

  1. Hi Marianne! What a pretty cushion, colourful and cheerful! I love the idea behind it and I’m sure she will love that cushion!!! That border is really pretty and the fabric back complements the crochet front perfectly!

Btw, thanks again for your sweet give away, I’m wearing your pretty bracelet now! I also linked back to you in my new post here: http://myfunkycrochet.blogspot.be/2014/09/finnish-granny-square-scarf-v-stitch.html – where I posted a couple of photos, too!

    Wishing you a nice weekend!
    Ingrid xx

    • Dear Ingrid! Thank you so much for your lovely compliments – I really appreciate your sweet comments!
Thanks too for letting me know your friendship bracelet arrived safely, very glad you’re happy with it – and how lovely of you to blog about it also! Marianne xx

Marianne xx

  2. Utterly gorgeous as always my lovely friend, I am sure your niece and her husband would have fallen in love the minute you presented them with the cushion. I hope you had a great trip and have landed back safely on home soil.

Big hugs, Much love Heike xx

    • Thank you very much for your lovely compliments, dearest Heike – I so appreciate your feedback. We did have the most fantastic trip – extremely short, but so well worth it. It was very special to be part of the wedding! And, yes, they really liked the “handmade-with-love”-present and the Dutch touch! Marianne xx

  3. A gorgeous cushion! I do love the colours, the border and the back – just everything. It is such a generous gift. I started crocheting my first cushion as well and I’m not sure how to do the back. But your cushion is a real inspiration. Thank you for sharing the pictures, Viola

  4. That cushion certainly is very Dutch, especially the fabric choices on the back which complement the orange trim perfectly. I love it! I live in Australia and come from a Dutch household and we always joke that the Dutch connection is the reason I love cheese so much, so it made me smile to read that your Canadian relative wanted a Dutch cheese slicer. Did she receive one? Colours and cheese: two very Dutch ideas! Your cushion is something to be cherished.

    • Thank you so much, Jodie! Ah, Dutch roots – et tu Brutus 😉 – so many Australian people I know, having Dutch parents/grandparents – for sure that’s where your love of cheese originates. Our niece did actually receive two cheese slicers and was very happy with them, as she was with her “I love Holland”-cushion! Marianne xx

    • Thanks so much – it’s always nice to hear people are enjoying the blog! Well, I do have a twitter account, but there’s not much activity going around over there, I’m afraid …. If you want to find me, I’m @marretjeroos there. Marianne xx
